The development of drone technology is a step towards smarter and more profitable crop farming. Mtech Digital Solutions is contributing to the advancement of Finnish agriculture by bringing the most modern solutions to practical farming.
Drones Are Becoming More Common Globally – What About in Finland?
The use of drones in agriculture has been studied for years, and they have already been applied in practical farming, for example, in crop imaging. The use of large drones in agriculture has grown rapidly in recent years, especially in Asia and South America. In Europe, regulatory constraints have limited the pace of adoption.
In many use cases, agricultural drones are a highly cost-effective alternative to conventional technologies. The advantages of the new technology include very low capital costs, flexibility, and ease of deployment. Modern agricultural drones typically carry a payload of 30–70 kilograms of solid or liquid product.
In Finland, the use of drones for crop protection trial operations was permitted last autumn, but current legislation still limits the use of heavier agricultural drones for applying crop protection products in practical farming. Data is currently being collected to enable future evaluation of regulatory changes.
Heavy Agricultural Drones to Be Tested on Finnish Fields
The DroneFarmi project, implemented in cooperation with Satafood Development Association, provides a framework for practical testing of drone technology in Finland. Funded by the rural development fund of the Satakunta ELY Centre, the project will be carried out in 2025–2026. Its aim is to develop solutions that support not only the efficiency of farms but also environmental sustainability.
Mtech’s expertise and role as a leading name in the digitalisation of Finnish agriculture is evident in the newly launched project. Drones can also improve the efficiency of fertiliser and crop protection product application under Finnish conditions.
Mtech Brings the Future to Crop Farming
“We want to be part of building the future of Finnish agriculture – in a concrete way, and with a real understanding of the needs of entrepreneurs. Promoting the use of drone technology is one example of how Mtech brings new solutions to contractors and farmers,” says Mikko Jääskeläinen, Commercial Director at Mtech.
From Mtech’s perspective, the most important thing is to understand how technology can serve farmers with cost-effective solutions. This means not only testing new solutions but also engaging in dialogue with stakeholders in the field.
Pioneering That Combines Technology and Practical Use
Mtech constantly operates at the forefront of the latest technology – not for the sake of technology itself, but because digitalisation can make farming more profitable and sustainable. The DroneFarmi project offers an opportunity to test and develop practical applications in cooperation with farmers.
“We are present where the farming solutions of the future are being built. For us, it’s important to be a trusted actor in the comprehensive development of technology. We cooperate with equipment manufacturers and bring new technology to Finland,” Jääskeläinen concludes.
